Bluetooth LowEnergy – BLE

Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE), also known as Bluetooth® Smart, is a short-range radio technology (operating at 2.4 GHz).
The main difference from RFID is that BLE devices are active radio transmitters and require power, such as from a battery.
With today's low-power electronic devices, BLE beacon applications can easily run on a single battery for up to a year,
depending on broadcast frequency and power levels.


A typical BLE beacon application is, for example, a key fob locator, where BLE can easily cover a few meters.
Similar to RFID badges, BLE can also be used for identification, as hybrid cards are available that include both
RFID and active BLE transmitters (e.g., opening a corridor door for an emergency room entrance from a few meters away).
With the necessary algorithms, BLE can also be used for short-range identification, such as smartphone recognition.


  • How does BLE work in our products?

    Your BLE-compatible device, such as your smartphone, scans for all BLE devices within range and receives information about each potential participant. The BLE-enabled Elatec TWN4 MultiTech reader will broadcast its presence for discovery. Once the connection between your phone and our reader is established and confirmed, the authentication process begins. For security purposes, the connection itself can be encrypted, and an entire credential backend can be added to the BLE communication.
